Rethinking the Classical

It goes without saying that the Bruckner Orchester is committed not just to its musical legacy but also to contemporary music; after all, reflecting tradition and the present equally is a key task of any orchestra that plays an important role in the cultural life of our times. This includes first performances and premieres of works by Miguel Kertsman, Robert Beaser, Christoph Cech, Leif Segerstam and, as an opus postumus, the Symphony No. 3 of the Upper Austrian composer Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter.

One particularly satisfying trend in this context has been the development of the new "Linzer Connection", which has seen both the Bruckner Orchester and the Ars Electronica Center join forces, not just with the joint concerts at the Ars Electronica Festival but also with the concertante performances of Richard Wagner’s "Ring des Nibelungen" at the Bruckner Festival - first in the season 2004/05 with "Rheingold". The first of the four operas that comprises the Ring is supported for the first time with a virtual cave stage design (artistic director: Johannes Deutsch); an unprecedented event in the history of the Ring interpretations.
Peter Schneider was the conductor of "Götterdämmerung" at the Bruckner Festival this Year in September 2007.
